A few weekends ago, I got really inspired by Justin De Leon's pesto... It's rustic like a nonna with a mortar and pestle, more coarse and less emulsified, so you get little pops of garlic, chunks of pine nut, and little chunks of parm reggiano, and it's more basil-y too. Better in every way, I thought... So, I came home and reworked our pesto, and it's the base for this pizza... The New Pesto Pie, with, yes, our new recipe pesto genovese, fresh mozzarella, slow-roasted heirloom cherry tomatoes from , finished with parm, coarse black pepper, toasted pine nuts, stracciatella, basil oil, and fresh basil

A few nights ago, a longtime guest asked me what happened to the Kevin Mccallister... and I realized it just kind of disappeared and I never actually explained... See, the Kevin was our plain cheese on the original menu, and it lived on there for like eight years plus. It was our tribute to "a lovely cheese pizza, just for me," and for years, the menu had a Macaulay Culkin icon next to the name... It was my best effort at channeling some core memory nostalgia of a pizza lunch on a Wednesday half day in elementary... And I think we nailed it, but over the years, my notion of the platonically perfect plain cheese has evolved, a lot to do with my visits to NYC... I'm into a little more rustic and brighter of a tomato sauce, and sauce on top of the cheese (instead of under it), mozzarella deli sliced the long way so every slice gets even coverage. It's the same archetype, but more refined? Like the Kevin grew up, and got a mortgage... Now, we just call it the "plain cheese." But between you and me... if you've gotta have the Kevin, just ask, we'll still make it...

Existential questions: Basil pre-bake or basil post-bake? Both? What about torn or whole?
On our standard margherita, we go pre-bake and whole leaf, but I can see the argument for the other way, too... So, we're asking ourselves the question, and you too...  Bianco does post bake whole, Razza does post bake and mostly torn, and those are two of the best margheritas you could ever have... And we want to make sure nothing we do is ever taken for granted... What do you think?

This is our Tribute to Justin DeLeon and Apollonia's, on Wilshire and now on Crenshaw. I'm making this one at Pizza City Fest LA, next Saturday, April 25th. The Primavera was Porch's dad's favorite pie from Bronx Pizza over in Hillcrest. A real North Jersey Italian dad order. Naturally it became Porch's favorite too. Sunday was Porch's last day at Tribute, and we wanted to send him off the only way we know how: with pizza... New today, "Porch's Primavera," a white pie with spinach, roasted peppers, garlic sautéed mushrooms, and farmer's market broccolini, with mozzarella, ricotta and pecorino... It's spring, and like the seasons, things change, and people come and go and grow, too. But the love always stays on the menu. Thank you, Porch. For everything.

It's Porch's last week at Tribute. It’s the end of a chapter, one that neither of us anticipated. See, we had the closest of mutual friends, but we weren't that close ourselves... We had hung out a few times starting in 2013, and we stayed in touch... Then in 2021, Ammanda and I were in the Bay Area, we met Porch for a pint at Fieldwork where he was GM, and then that night we shared multiple pizzas and multiple daiquiris all over Oakland… and then we catered his wedding down in the East Village, and a few months later he moved back to San Diego and needed a job like, yesterday. He started at Tribute behind the bar, you know, maybe just for a week or two, just while he got settled and got a job managing a taproom. And then, he just never left… until he does at the end of this week, more than three years later…

In that time, he went from bartender to bar lead, to bar manager, to AGM, to Operations Manager: my #2, the person I trust with basically everything. And we’ve watched Porch grow into one of the best I've ever worked alongside: an inspiring teacher, a big paper big ideas guy, a savvy technical analyst, a tycoon of an event producer, a board certified associate master nog blender, the world’s leading tree negroni expert, and, at the top of the list, a patient and caring leader of people… and a lover of food and a giver of hospitality in the truest sense. He made our team better, pushed us to new heights, held things together when things were hard.

In that same stretch of time, we’ve watched Porch become a dad to Luna, and we love her so much, even though she still refuses to say “Yes Chef.” And Marcela, of course, thank you for sharing so much of Porch with us over these years, and congrats on the new gig, we love you and we’re so proud of you, too.

Porch, love you buddy, we're really gonna miss you, man. Even that damn Stanley, too. Columbia, South Carolina, look out, he’s a crazy man.

Porch will be here every day this week, until his last shift on Sunday, April 12th. Come in, say goodbye, show him some love / Smirnoff Ice on his way out the door; he's earned every bit of it.

Our Mike's Hot Honey Party is probably our biggest event of the year, and this year's is coming up two weeks from today, on Saturday, March 28.

Last year will be hard to top, but we're trying. Mike is bringing in chefs from New York and São Paulo alongside more of San Diego's best: a lineup of great friends, with a menu that's all-you-can-eat, all-you-can-drink, every dish and cocktail featuring at least a little MHH. SD's best bartenders behind the bar, and DJs Delaceiba, Like, and B3ttyBloop keeping it moving all night. Mike Kurtz himself will be there with the whole Hot Honey crew. They're here to party, and they don't f**k around.

Two shows: 4:30–7pm and 8–10:30pm. Each one is 2.5 hours of great food and drink, good people, good music. Book via Resy. Link in bio, and at tributepizza.com

To get to the location on North Park Way, take the MTS bus route and get off at 30th St & North Park Way station. From there, it's a short walk westbound towards the destination.

If driving, take the I-805 or I-15 and exit at University Ave. Head eastbound until you reach 30th St, then turn left and head northbound. Finally, turn right onto North Park Way. Limited street parking is available in the surrounding neighborhood, but there are also paid parking lots nearby for convenience.
