With Giant Steps, John Coltrane pushed harmony in new directions, bringing distinct notes together to create something entirely his own.
We take the same approach to coffee. Our Signature Blends celebrate the art of blending, finding harmony and contrast between distinct coffees to create something new.
Giant Steps, named after Coltrane’s landmark album, layers deep cocoa with sweeter notes of toasted marshmallow and graham cracker.

Every blend needs a strong foundation.
Hayes Valley Espresso is the darker side of our Signature Blends, built around deep chocolate and brown sugar sweetness, with a full body designed to hold its own as espresso.
Bold, steady, and composed with purpose.

A good composition isn’t always about perfect harmony. Sometimes it’s the contrast that makes it interesting.
Bella Donovan brings that idea to our Signature Blends, pairing rich chocolate with bright, jammy blueberry for a blend that’s both familiar and unexpected.
Different notes, better together.

For us, coffee and jazz have always shared a rhythm: precise in craft, expressive in every interpretation.
That idea has shaped Blue Bottle since the beginning. Our Signature Blend, Giant Steps, was named after John Coltrane’s groundbreaking album. This coffee’s roast profile is not unlike his visionary jazz, with smooth, chocolatey bass notes and sweet, divergent riffs.
This month, in honor of Coltrane’s centennial, we’re returning to where it all began with a month of jazz, celebrating the music that inspired us and continues to move culture forward.

This month marks one hundred years
of John Coltrane.
Throughout his life, Coltrane transformed jazz again and again. With Giant Steps, he pushed harmony to its limits, creating a progression so demanding it remains a proving ground for musicians today. His work continued to evolve, opening new possibilities for what music could express.
That spirit of continual transformation has stayed with us since the beginning. We named our Giant Steps blend after the Coltrane record we returned to again and again. It continues to remind us that craft is never finished and that every creation can become the starting point for a new interpretation.
On his centennial, we celebrate a musician who never stopped searching and whose music still asks us to listen differently.

What does the future of coffee taste like?
Our newest limited-release Studio Blend — Beyond Arabica — explores this question unlike any coffee we’ve ever offered. This blend showcases coffee’s remarkable biodiversity, working alongside pioneering producers that are redefining what specialty-grade non-Arabica coffees can be.
🇮🇳The rare Excelsa component of this blend comes to us from South India Coffee Company. Lead by Akshay Dashrath and Komal Sable, SICC works with farms in the Coorg region to bring rare, climate-resilient Excelsa into the specialty spotlight.
🇻🇳The Canephora (Robusta) component comes to us from Great Cherry in Vietnam. They focus on producing high quality Robusta while advocating for producer equity and fair market pricing.

Our newest Signature Origin, Costa Rica Tarrazú La Lia Black Honey, comes from Luis Alberto and Oscar Adolfo Monge. These brothers were pioneers of Costa Rica’s micromill movement, and their dedication to quality and innovation continues to shape the country’s coffee story.
We chose this Black Honey lot for its vibrant, fruit-forward profile. By leaving most of the coffee’s natural mucilage intact during processing, La Lia coaxes out layers of strawberry jam, blackberry, and caramelized sweetness in an expressive, beautifully balanced cup.
Bring home a bag of this limited-release coffee, or try it expertly prepared by a barista in our cafes.

Our latest Exceedingly Rare release, Vietnam Quang Tri 96B Excelsa Natural, invites you to experience the evolving possibilities of Vietnamese specialty coffee.
Grown by our longtime partners at 96B, this coffee showcases Excelsa — a distinct coffee species that makes up less than 1% of the world’s coffee production. While Arabica and Robusta dominate most conversations about coffee, producers like 96B are revealing the remarkable potential of Excelsa through thoughtful cultivation and meticulous processing.
A 120-hour anaerobic natural process brings out an intensely jammy profile layered with papaya, mango, and blueberry jam, finishing with a lingering stevia-like sweetness and a full body.

As summer gives way to fall, we’re saying goodbye to a seasonal favorite: Golden Hour.
At the heart of this summer blend is a carbonic-macerated Rwanda component from Bwishaza Cooperative, home to the Kungahara Women’s Group, a community of more than 200 women farmers.
As 2026 marks the International Year of the Woman Farmer, we’re celebrating the women whose knowledge, care, and dedication help shape the coffees we love.
Savor Golden Hour while it’s here — available while supplies last.
