There is a proposed petition to increase closures at the Cabrillo State Marine Reserve affecting our local fishermen here in San Diego. Fishermen there already have a limited fishing area so increased closures in this area would dramatically affect local catch and the community’s access to it – especially with sea urchin, sheephead, rock crab, spiny lobster, and rockfish.

California Department of Fish & Wildlife has previously denied this petition, but now it’s at the California Fish & Game Commission where they are accepting public comments. We need your support and ask that you submit an emailed public comment by May 14th.

To email your public comment:

1) Draft your public comment in an email. Visit https://pastebin.com/ayr6v62h to learn more about writing a public comment and for a template example you can use or scan the QR code in the above graphic.

2) Add “Public Comment in Support of CDFW’s decision to Deny Petition 2023-33MPA-AM” to the subject line of your email

5 Reasons Why Buying Local Seafood Is Important:

1) It’s local! It’s not imported and hasn’t traveled thousands of miles so it has a small carbon footprint and shorter supply chains.

2) Unlike farmed fish or other domesticated sources of protein, local seafood is all natural and doesn’t require pesticides, fertilizers, or antibiotics. Local seafood is still wild - they don’t eat processed fed!

3) It’s nutrient dense and is an excellent source of omega-3 oils and protein. If you think about it, wild caught fish is our last wild protein since chickens, cows, and pigs have been domesticated for thousands of years.

4) Buying local seafood helps support self-reliance in our communities as well as food security. When you buy local, you help maintain a robust, decentralized food system which is vital in uncertain times, just like we saw with the COVID-19 pandemic.

5) When you buy from local fishermen, you help the local economy. It keeps money in the community because for every $1 paid to a U.S. fisherman for catch, it generates $2 in the economy as jobs and related products and services. It’s a great return on investment!

Here are 5 ways to support local fishermen and keep catch in the community:

1) Visit your nearest fishermen’s market and buy local catch. They might also be at nearby farmer’s markets selling their catch too!

2) Going out to eat and want seafood? Find restaurants that buy and serve local catch. This helps keep not only fishermen in business but encourages restaurants to keep buying from our local fishermen. It’s also important to ask restaurants about local catch. If the demand is there, restaurants will meet it.

3) Venture away from the fish you normally buy and try new ones. There are so many different species caught off the coast. Fishermen always have advice and tips on how to cook their catch so don’t be shy to ask! Diversifying your plate helps spread the pressure over many species instead of one so it’s good for the environment too!

4) Support policies and politicians that help local fishermen. This is more important than ever as fishing communities are facing restrictions on fishing areas, historic docks are being replaced by luxury developments or yacht harbors, dwindling fishing infrastructure, and pollution.

5) Spread the word about buying local fish and supporting fishermen! Bring your friends and family to fishermen’s markets and/or restaurants that buy local catch. Let them know about the importance of eating local seafood and supporting local fishermen.
