Congratulations to Emily Provenzano the recipient of the inaugural Graduate Studies Award sponsored by Rough Draft Brewing Company. This award goes to an outstanding grad student in the Cognitive Science Department. Here’s a little from Emily about her work...
I am a 6th year PhD Candidate in Cognitive Science working under the amazing Dr. Marta K***s. In my work I use EEG and behavioral measures to better understand how people read by recording their brain waves while they silently read sentences. I want to better understand if there’s a difference we can see in brain waves between people who say they ‘hear a little voice reading in their head’ and those who don’t! It can be slow work because collecting the data on each individual (I have 50 in my current study) takes 3 hours each, and that’s not including the hours afterwards of grading their behavioral tests and cleaning the EEG data. But nothing beats the feeling of looking at your new data and knowing that, for just a moment (until you email your advisor about it), you are the only person who knows something new about science.
