Writing competitive research grants is essential for early-career faculty, yet it is rarely taught. A new UC San Diego study shows that hands-on, structured grant writing training can make a measurable difference.
Researchers found that junior faculty who completed UC San Diego Health Sciences’ Grant Writing Course significantly increased their grant submissions and funding success, with especially strong outcomes for women and faculty from underrepresented backgrounds. After completing the course, 79% of participants secured grant funding as a principal or multi-principal investigator, despite the highly competitive NIH funding landscape.
Published in Academic Medicine, the study highlights how mentorship, peer collaboration and a step-by-step approach to NIH grant writing can help launch successful research careers and strengthen the future of health sciences innovation. 📊🧪

To get to the café and tapas bar & restaurant as well as the Italian restaurant and cafe on Torrey Pines Scenic Drive in San Diego, you can use public transportation or drive yourself. If using public transport, take the bus to Torrey Pines Road and then walk for approximately 15 minutes towards the cliffside. If driving, park at the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve parking lot and take the path leading towards the coast until you reach a fork in the road. Take a left at this fork and continue on until you reach the café.
