Big Mountain is an American reggae band formed in 1986 at San Diego, California by vocalist Joaquin “Quino” McWhinney. The band gained wide recognition and became known for its cover of Peter Frampton‘s “Baby, I Love Your Way“, which became a top 10 hit single in the US in early 1994, reaching No. 6 on the US Billboard Hot 100, No. 1 on the Mainstream Top 40 and No. 2 in the UK.

In the early 1970s, a new genre of music was emerging in Jacksonville, Florida. A mixture of blues, country, gospel, and the English invasion of rock and roll that later was to be coined the phrase “Southern Rock.” The music was filled with style and emotion and with bands in the forefront such as the Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd and a band from Jacksonville, Florida called Molly Hatchet. Named after a famous 17th-century axe murderess “hatchet molly” who would behead her lovers with the hand tool Lizzy Borden made famous.

With such underground hits as “Come Back, Traci” (a tribute to an underaged Traci Lords), “I Want ’em Dead”, and “So Fu**ed up”, the band prefers to sing about such topics as po*******hy, classic horror movies, old TV shows, comic books, alcohol, being fat, and getting drunk. They have been quoted as being proud to be fat, drunk, and stupid.

How do you describe genre-defying roots music adventurers Dustbowl Revival? Even
tireless founder and lead songwriter Z. Lupetin would agree you have to come to a
show to find out. Going strong into their second decade after starting from a humble
Craigslist ad posted in bohemian Venice Beach, some woulr say Dustbowl’s energetic
collective (there have been nearly thirty members!) plays a spicy cocktail of folky-funk
or booty-shaking jangly rock n’ soul: expertly mixing their New Orleans-tinted brass
section with their signature Laurel Canyon harmonies and fearless lyrics.
While most bands stay in one lane or fade away quickly, Dustbowl Revival is a
testament to building a fanbase and their own sound the old-fashioned way, with hard
work and moving songs that stick to your bones when you leave the concert. There’s a
reason they continue to get written up in Rolling Stone and Billboard and get played on
AAA radio 18+ years after they set sail.
After releasing seven acclaimed albums starting in 2008, including their beloved live
record With A Lampshade On (2015) recorded mostly at their LA homebase the famed
Troubadour, and their charting self-titled record (2017) produced by Grammy-winner
Ted Hutt (Flogging Molly, Old Crow Medicine Show), perhaps their magnum opus is
2020’s deeply personal Is It You, Is It Me – produced by Sam Kassirer (Lake Street Dive,
Josh Ritter). It showcases their penchant for orchestral brass and intricate string work
with politically-charged story-songs that unfold like mini-movies.

To get to the live music venue and restaurant located on Newport Avenue in San Diego, you can take the public transport by boarding bus number 35 from downtown San Diego towards Ocean Beach. Get off at the last stop on Newport Avenue and walk towards the west for about five minutes. Alternatively, if you are driving, head towards Ocean Beach via I-8 W and take the Sunset Cliffs Boulevard exit. At the end of Sunset Cliffs Boulevard, turn left onto Newport Avenue and find parking in one of the many street spots available in the area.
