Our friends at Exportadora de Café California are bringing some very special guests to the shop—four coffee roasters from Tijuana and five producers from Veracruz. We’re hosting a cupping so you can taste what they’ve been working on, followed by a mixer to talk shop, ask questions, and generally nerd out about beans. Yara and Arely are making pastries for the occasion. Friday, April 10. Cupping starts at 2.

We know what the sign says, but we folded. Breakfast tacos are here: a classic option with scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, and pepper jack; a veggie-loaded take with kale, mushrooms, black beans, and avocado; and a bold soyrizo variation with scrambled eggs and a kick. Finally, a reason to be a morning person—and it comes wrapped in a tortilla.

Today’s announcement is one of the favorites we’ve made in a long while. The passion one. The giddy one.

SDM and CH Projects have started a book club. Because we love the almighty profanity out of books, and no one ever died thinking, "I should've read less."

We’re partnering with some of San Diego’s great independent bookstores, hoping our literary scheme will drive you into their lovely arms. Indie bookstores are the marrow in a city’s bones. Sentence churches. Long thoughts from thinkers. Ray Bradbury’s in there. Toni Morrison, too. Vonnegut, Didion, some unfamous person who wrote like a hurricane for one book and then vanished, great voices the world hasn’t yet discovered.

In a modern age where we do what the bloop and bleep tells us, books are Airbnbs for your brain.

We are not above bribery to do our part in this book revolution. If you join our club, and show proof that you bought it from a participating local, indie bookstore—each month we’ll randomly select one member to get a $300 gift card to any of the  locations (Craft & Commerce, Seneca, Born & Raised, Ironside, Neighborhood, etc.).

Keep your eyes on the next issue of San Diego Mag (September) for the first book. A book that altered us in weird and great ways.

In coming months, we’ll beautify your feed with bookstore glamour shots. But for now, here are the bookstores that we’ve partnered with:

📍The Book Catapult 📸
📍Verbatim Books .books 📸
📍Warwick’s 📸
📍La Playa Books
📍Diesel Books
📍Bay Books Coronado

Email [email protected] to join the club and get the full list of participating stores. And if you own a bookstore and would like to join us, reach out.
